Travelvision Media is producing an intriguing documentary about Australia's most famous radio station, Sydney's 2SM and its enigmatic, elusive proprietor, “Big Bill” Caralis — the Greta Garbo of Oz radio.
This exclusive peek behind the microphone, four years in the making, has been developed by Derek Taylor of Travelvision Media, without any assistance from the current 2SM management. With the latter refusing to cooperate with the project, the filmmakers have enjoyed an un-compromised independence in their exploration of the station and its colourful history.
Taylor, best known for his travel presentations, will examine the story of the pioneering station from its strait-laced beginnings as the Catholic Church’s broadcaster, through to becoming an Australian entertainment legend during the rocking, raging 1960s, and up to the present day. Most Sydney listeners who came of age tuned to the radio dial have a story to tell about this once-great station that launched legendary broadcasting personalities such as Bob Rogers, Mike Walsh and Steve Liebmann, to name just a few.

Travelvision's documentary will look at the mystique that surrounded the station throughout the 1960s and ‘70s. Not to mention its total lack of current mystique. The program takes an insider’s look at 2SM, showcasing on-air personalities that once made the broadcaster so exciting.
Derek Taylor is currently seeking to contact presenters who've appeared on the station. He invites anyone (famous or otherwise) to contact them with any interesting anecdotes or memorabilia from the unforgettable "2SM Era.”
These days, 2SM does not even appear in the industry ratings and, sadly, sits on the edge of its own grave in the radio cemetery. Like many before them, the producers approached 2SM’s present owner, the controversial and reclusive Bill Caralis, regarding his plans for 2SM and his so-called "Super Network” of 34 regional stations. The answer was dead air.
Unlike most Australian media moguls, Caralis has never granted an interview or been photographed. That was, until the Travelvision Media team captured him ambling through Sydney Airport with his shopping bags and wearing an ill-fitting tracksuit heading off for his weekly visit to Tweed Heads. His days in splendid isolation may soon be at an end.
Thanks to all those who’ve supported the project so far. Please keep the feedback coming via the 2SM Superstory blog.
